The Art of Woodcarving - Making a Coat of Arms

Coats of Arms

Steeped in history, coats of arms are iconic symbols that are completely unique to you or your company. Each carving is therefore one of a kind and is given the careful attention it deserves. We use the finest timber (often limewood or oak) and depending on the finish you want we can carefully paint and gild you coat of arms, showing the richness and importance of heraldic colours.

‘Exquisite carving and painted to perfection'

Crests

Our handmade 3D crests are exceptional stand-alone pieces for you to display and treasure. Each piece is carefully hand carved to replicate your heraldic crest and bring it to life. This style of carving is inspired by those of the Knights of the Garter, which are displayed in the choir stalls of Saint Georges Chapel, Windsor Castle. Most often we will make a clay model prior to carving, which we use as reference when making the piece. You're invited to visit our workshop and see your crest being made, alternatively we will keep you regularly updated with it's progress.

‘William has so far carved two heraldic crests for me and both are exquisite, they pay careful attention to the desires of the client before the carving begins’

Windsor Herald - The Royal College of Arms

Bespoke heraldry

We love working on bespoke projects and have worked on many exciting commissions over the years, helping clients achieve their dreams. Your heraldry can be displayed in so many ways, whether that be large heraldic beasts, your coat of arms carved into a beautiful table or bespoke door. Recently we worked with the College of Arms to make five new overmantles for the officers of arms, incorporating their heraldic badge and title into the design.

Comissioning process

Our team work closely with you from the start to understand your requirements and define the essential components of the project brief, such as the size, materials, finish, and positioning of the final piece. It may be that you already have a clear concept in mind that you want to bring to life, or you may prefer us to provide input and suggestions based on your project brief. Either way, you can expect a friendly and personable service which will ensure we arrive at a final design you are truly happy with.

Key questions prior to commissioning

If yes then that’s great, have a think through some of the other questions below and get in touch with us. If no, we can happily put you in touch with the College of Arms who will be able to research your history and guide you through the process of getting a new one granted if needed.
How big do you want your heraldry to be? Think carefully about where you will display the piece or pieces. What is the lighting like in this area (during the day and in the evening)? One helpful idea is to print off or draw a rough version of your heraldry at the size you want and hold it up where it will be displayed.
Do you want your heraldry to be left natural so you can see the beautiful wood grain or do you want it painted and/or gilded to proudly show the heraldic colours?
We’ve put together a range of prices to accommodate our various budgets. If price is an issues, please let us know, there are ways we can change the design, material or finish to produce heraldry at a price that works for you.
